The Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care of Malta, Mario Galea, launched the 19th edition of the Premju Anzjan tas-Sena (Senior of the Year Award) on July 27, during a visit to the Day Centre for the Elderly in Dingli.
The award celebrates the achievement of a senior citizen in the field of voluntary work, and is given to the person whose character and activity is an inspiration to others. A Special Award will also be given to a resident who attends an elderly home/day centre.
Mr. Galea commented that the award challenges negative attitudes which view ageing as the worst phase in life. He also emphasised that although seniors stop formal employment when they reach retirement age, many of them invest a lot of their time in clubs, bands, social and religious organizations, political movements, local councils, and parishes, amongst others. The Premju Anzjan tas-Sena, he said, is a way of celebrating active ageing.
Citizens living in Malta or Gozo and who are aged from 65 years upwards can be nominated for the award until 10 September 2012. Further information can be found here.
