The launch of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations in Greece took place the 2nd of March 2012 at the Information Office of the European Parliament in Greece.
Mr. Livanos, General Secretary of Youth, declared in one of the opening speeches that “today intergenerational understanding is more important than ever. We need to pass a message to younger generations that the current situation in Greece and all around Europe will have to be solved with a general change that focuses on the development of the rights of every citizen, regardless of age”. Amongst other speakers, there were interventions by Mrs. Dallaporta Anna, General Secretary of European Funds, Mr. Peroulakis Aris, Head of Communication, Partnership & Networks of the EC in Greece, and Mr. Rouskas Odisseas, National Coordinator of the EY2012.
The event was an opportunity for a large number of stakeholders involved in Active Ageing to showcase various initiatives within the country and give visibility to their own best practices. All participants had the chance to explore existing mechanisms and initiatives presented by the representatives of various organisations, institutions or universities, amongst others the National Centre of Social Research, CEDEFOP, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the NGO 50+ and the National University of Athens.
Mr. Odisseas said that the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012 would be an opportunity for various organisations to gain more focus and facilitate dialogue, thereby adopting a more realistic policy for Active Ageing.
During the closure of the event, Mrs. Mirto Maria Ragga stressed that there was a real need for more volunteering, and that the networking chances that participants to the event had enjoyed would foster Active Ageing initiatives and contribute to create a more dynamic approach to Active Ageing.
The next event within the EY2012 framework in Greece will take place the 4th of April 2012 at the Greek Film Archive Foundation, with a photographic exhibition and the screening of several films.
