On 11 October the European Commission held a major international conference and awards ceremony in Budapest at which was launched a new initiative of the Open Society Foundations, Mayors Making the Most of EU Funds for Roma Inclusion Network (MERI).

The initiative brings together local governments which have implemented, or plan to implement, programmes and measures supporting the integration and inclusion of vulnerable groups with a focus on Roma.

The event brought together 300 participants from more than 20 European countries representing public authorities at EU, national, regional and mostly local level, international institutions and other stakeholders. More than 20 good practices of Roma inclusion at local level were presented by Mayors themselves.

The Awards ceremony celebrated best local initiatives in the fields of education, employment, housing and integration of Roma migrants and honoured several Mayors for their contribution to the process of Roma inclusion.

The Commission welcomes the set-up of the Mayors Making the Most of EU Funds for Roma Inclusion Network with the aim to promote Roma inclusion through sharing of best practices and learning across European countries, and to bring to the forefront local level achievements.
