Work Forum on the implementation of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities

Work Forum on the implementation of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities

The Work Forum on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN Convention) met in Brussels on 29 April.

The Forum brought together representatives of those responsible for implementing and monitoring the implementation of the UN Convention, both at EU and national level; these are Focal Points, Coordination Mechanisms and Monitoring Mechanisms. Civil society and disabled people's organisations also actively participate in the Work Forum.

The Work Forum aimed at ensuring that the UN Convention is fully implemented. It allowed to share experiences on its practical implementation and monitoring and to promote solutions to common challenges. It is organised by the European Commission and meets every year since 2010.

This year, the Work Forum focused on:

  • Improving synergies between the EU and the national level in the implementation of the UN Convention. The implementation of the UN Convention is a shared task: both the EU and the vast majority of its Member States are parties to the UN Convention and they implement it within their respective competences.
  • What could be done differently to implement the UN Convention in the EU? The EU's implementation will be under scrutiny this year by the UN Convention's committee. Those who have contributed to this examination through an alternative report will present their main findings and make concrete proposals for improvement.
