A joint ILO/EC International Conference 'Competitiveness and Jobs in Europe' will take place on 11 December 2014 in Brussels.

A lack of competitiveness has been identified by many as the underlying issue at the heart of the European sovereign debt crisis and the on-going job crisis.

Competitiveness varies according to

  • the business environment,
  • the sector, and
  • even the level of economic development of the country,

all of which require a different set of policies.

The conference will offer an international forum for stimulating high-quality debate between experts, social partners and policy makers on assessing the issue of competitiveness in the EU and other advanced and emerging economies and its relation to the crisis and to long term labour market and social outcomes.

Furthermore, the event will provide an opportunity to advance new initiatives for sustainably exiting the crisis in the short term and to move to alternative options for more balanced growth and employment in the longer term.
