Research seminar: The measurement of the efficiency of social protection systems

27/05/2013 Family on the beach

Social protection systems in the EU Member States face the need to adapt to the changing world of labour, new family structures and the demographic changes.

They equally need to balance the wishes of people for high levels of social protection against the need for public services to become more efficient and the provision of support to become more cost effective in the context of the almost certain continuation of constraints on public expenditure. Assessing moves in this direction with appropriate indicators is therefore of major importance.

The purpose of this seminar is to review the current state of knowledge on how to measure the efficiency of social protection systems by:

  • considering the main dimensions;
  • examining how international organisations perform the task;
  • presenting the results of recent work on particular areas of social protection.
