Eila Nevanranta is an ordinary 76-year-old Finnish grandmother who one summer evening a couple of years ago decided to write a rap song. Now she is one of the stars of independent music label Stupido and her videos are a worldwide online hit.
The Rapper Grandma (Räppimummo), who started listening to hip-hop music back in the 1980s, launched her debut album in spring 2012 under the title “Skolioosi” (Scoliosis). She decided to go for that title because not even her scoliosis and her age can’t stop her from rapping, she says.
“Nobody wants to listen a singing grandma, that’s why I rap”, explains Eila.
All her songs, which are written by her, have a message. In “Mummo” (Grandma), for example, she says how important it is to visit your grandparents, and “Suvaitsevaisuus” (Tolerance) has a message against racism. “Even if you can’t love, do not hate. After all, we are all the same”, she raps.
A powerful example of active-ager, Eila Nevanranta offered a cheerful performance at the European Year 2012 National Closing Event in Finland, which took place in Helsinki on December 12th.
