The European Commission has proposed to update the rules that coordinate social security systems in Europe. Today, if a person is registered as unemployed in, for example Spain, and moves to for example Denmark to live and look for work, he can still receive his country of origin's unemployment benefits for at least three months. The Commission proposes to extend this period to 6 months. The Danish employment service will give support and send monthly reports to Spain on the activities of the unemployed person. Moving and working in another EU country is a fundamental right of all EU citizens. Free movement of people would not be possible without EU rules on coordination of social security.
