The Access City Award is the European prize for making cities more accessible to people with disabilities and older people. The award is open to all cities within the EU with more than 50,000 inhabitants. Since 2010, 274 cities have entered the competition. A total of 35 different municipalities have received awards for their efforts to offer equal access to city life for the elderly and people with disabilities. This year, seven cities in total have been recognised for having risen to the challenge of making accessibility for everyone a civic priority. This includes an overall winner and two runners up, as well as winners in four “special mention” categories. These seven cities and the previous winners have helped to make it possible for disabled and older people to fully participate in their communities. Their political commitment, innovative ideas and resolute progress towards creating accessible cities can act as a beacon to light the way for thousands of other cities across Europe to make similar efforts.
