The European Platform against Poverty and Social Exclusion - A European framework for social and territorial cohesion  (12/08/2011)

The EU has identified restoring economic growth and providing more and better jobs as key factors in fighting poverty. In order to help achieve this, the European Commission proposes establishing a European Platform against Poverty and Social Exclusion. This Communication sets out the challenges presented by poverty and exclusion and outlines the contribution of different policies to reducing poverty and increasing inclusion. It goes on to identify a number of associated actions and to explain the design and the content of the Platform. This publication is available in printed format in all EU official languages.

The Social Protection Committee (SPC), a policy forum for Member States and the European Commission, has produced its 2011 Report on the social dimension of the Europe 2020 Strategy. This leaflet summarises the Report, introducing the SPC work, describing EU poverty and social exclusion targets and analysing the state of play and trends in this area. It goes on to examine poverty reduction and prevention policies and outlines key messages adopted by the SPC. Selected national programmes and EU instruments for tackling poverty and social exclusion are also detailed. The leaflet is available in all 23 official EU languages.

There are currently 79 million people living in a state of poverty in the European Union. The situation is different in each Member State, but each state is affected by the social and economic phenomenon of poverty. Social policies are the responsibility of national governments, however the European Union supports and complements their actions through the implementation of a social and financial aid strategy in particular. During this period of economic crisis, the construction of a united society is more than ever a priority policy for the EU. To turn a decisive corner and mobilise troops into battle, the EU has designated 2010 as "European Year for combating poverty and social exclusion". This flyer is available in the 23 official languages of the European Union.

Child Poverty and Well-Being in the EU - Current status and way forward  (25/02/2008)

Using commonly agreed indicators, this report identifies the predominant factors affecting child poverty in each country. Indicators have not been used to name and shame but to group countries according to the common challenges they face: joblessness, in-work poverty, insufficient support to families.
