There are currently 79 million people living in a state of poverty in the European Union. The situation is different in each Member State, but each state is affected by the social and economic phenomenon of poverty. Social policies are the responsibility of national governments, however the European Union supports and complements their actions through the implementation of a social and financial aid strategy in particular. During this period of economic crisis, the construction of a united society is more than ever a priority policy for the EU. To turn a decisive corner and mobilise troops into battle, the EU has designated 2010 as "European Year for combating poverty and social exclusion". This flyer is available in the 23 official languages of the European Union.
