Today, employers are not obliged to pay posted workers more than the minimum wage set by the host country. - Today, employers are not obliged to pay posted workers more than the minimum wage set by the host country. This can create wage gaps between posted and local workers. It can also result in unfair competition between companies. We need rules on equal pay and working conditions for posted and local workers. The European Commission's goal is to guarantee that labour mobility across the EU works in a way that is fair to all.

Today one in five young Europeans cannot find a job. - Today one in five young Europeans cannot find a job. This figure equates to around five million people in the EU. Young people have been hardest hit by the economic crisis because they often lack the experience and skills to be competitive in a context where jobs are scarce. SMEs are a key employer in today’s labour market and are recovering more quickly from the economic crisis than large enterprises. They also play an important role in driving Europe’s recovery. However, SMEs are often not the first port of call for young people searching for work, which can result in them missing out on potential talent. Aware of these challenges, the EU’s Youth@Work programme aims to consolidate national and EU efforts to reverse youth employment trends. It should pro­mote con­tacts between young peo­ple and SMEs, which plays the role of a motor in the recov­ery of the con­ti­nent.

The Youth@Work campaign however, aims to show that thanks to their fresh take on the world, young people often have lots of energy and innovative ideas which can be useful to businesses. In Sweden, the unemployment rate among young people was 24% in 2010. However, even if young people tend to be more attracted by working in multinational firms, 99.8% of the enterprises in Sweden are SMEs. Umbilical Design is one of them. According to founder and CEO Cecilia Hertz, it’s usually people below 30 that come up with creative ideas and ask the unexpected questions. That’s the reason why she likes to involve them in many of her company’s projects.

Damian Abgrall, 26, and his associate Timothée Martin, 22, choose the path of entrepreneurship by setting up their own computer development company. Created a year ago, thanks to material, financial and moral support, their SME Wid’op now employs four workers aged between 21 and 23.

According to a European study however, Greeks are the most likely to prefer to be self-employed rather than to be an employee. Orestis Matsoukas, 28, shares this opinion. He recently started his own SME called Orama Group which helps young companies to develop themselves. Nowadays he has a job that he likes and feels a sense of achievement because he has created something on his own.

According to a European study, Slovakia had the second highest rate of youth unemployment in 2010 with 32.6%. Terezia Madarova is 29 year old. When she lost her job 10 years ago, she found herself unsure of what to do next. She decided it was a great opportunity to start her own modelling and casting agency. The young woman made her first steps in her one room apartment: she bought a computer, a camera and started taking pictures of her friends. Nowadays she’s the owner of one of the largest agencies in Central Europe.

In 2010, the youth unemployment rate in Latvia was 34 % - one of the highest rates in the EU. After losing her job two years ago, Zane Lase-Lasmane, 27, decided to create her own company called Artbag. Subsequently she received financial support from the European Social Fund and national employment services. Today, thanks to a lot of effort and a bit of help she’s the proud owner of a company that is growing bigger by the day.

Carola Raimondo has been an entrepreneur for 16 years now and she owns two businesses employing young people. Cristina Ghimpu is one of these young people. She’s from Romania and she found a job in one of Carola Raimondo’s companies thanks to the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs programme. The two women are very happy with this exchange of experience and knowledge.

In Lithuania, around 35% of young people aged between 15-24 years old are unemployed. Martynas Barkauskas, 19, studies political science at Vilnius University. Thanks to the help of the Lithuanian Public Employment Service, he found a job in parallel with his studies in a food company.

In Belgium, 50% of the population has a favourable opinion of entrepreneurs but the entrepreneurship rate is still below 10%. Diane Mbarushimana, 27, took the risk and is establishing a company called Guheka to make products for parents and young children, such as baby carriers. As she didn't feel confident enough to become self-employed, she first turned to an association which helps her to concentrate on her start-up without having to reach a certain level of turnover each month. Then she applied for a micro-loan, through microStart. Nowadays she’s really happy to be her own boss.
