Healthcare abroad

If you are covered by a national social security scheme, coordination at EU level ensures health cover for you and your family when abroad – for longer stays or just on holiday.

Does my health insurance institution cover the costs of my health care in other European countries? Two scenarios are possible:

Unforeseen treatment (European Health Insurance Card)

While travelling in another European country, you need unforeseen medical treatment.  This is covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

OR

Planned treatment

The treatment is the reason for your travel to another European country.  These costs can be met if you obtain prior authorisation.
