Treatment, coverage & costs

Doctors

  • With your European Health Insurance Card, you can get treatment from doctors practising in public healthcare centres.
  • You will be charged a small standard fee per visit.

Dentists

  • With your European Health Insurance Card, you can get emergency treatment from dentists practising in state healthcare centres.
  • You will be charged a small standard fee per visit.

Hospital treatment

  • You can get in-patient treatment only if a doctor in the public system refers you to a hospital or if you are admitted through the accident and emergency department of a state hospital.

Prescriptions

  • Medicine is free if the prescription is issued by a state doctor.
  • Your prescription should be filled by a state pharmacy or you will be charged.

Ambulance

  • Ambulance travel is free if you show your European Health Insurance Card.

Air ambulance

  • Your European Health Insurance Card does not cover transport by air ambulance.
  • Charges are not refundable.

Reimbursement

  • There are no reimbursements. You will only be charged your share of the costs.
  • If you have had to pay for care, contact your national health insurance provider once you return home to seek reimbursement.

Patient contribution

Persons entitled to healthcare benefits pay

  • the sum of €3 for a visit to a general practitioner
  • the sum of €6 for a visit to a specialist
  • a fee of €0.50 for each prescribed pharmaceutical product
  • a fee of €0.50 for each laboratory test

There is a maximum charge of €10 per prescription or per laboratory test prescription form.

Patients who visit the Accident and Emergency Department pay the sum of € 10, regardless of the services they will receive.
