bright minds to the bright future!
From
17-22 September 2005, Russia will host the 17th annual
EU Contest for Young Scientists. A selection of Europe’s
most brilliant young scientific minds will be competing
to win prizes totalling € 28 500. Some 126 young people
from 35 countries will be exhibiting 79 innovative projects.
The competition is open to people aged between 15 and
20 and will be judged by 15 distinguished scientists.
An exhibition of the students’ entries will be set up
at Moscow’s Bauman University, where journalists will
have the opportunity to meet the participants and learn
more about their projects. In addition, Nobel laureates
will be on-site to meet the finalists and members of
the press.

EU Contest for Young Scientists - And the winners are
... ... from Germany, Spain and Switzerland
   
At 13.00 on Wednesday,
21 September the waiting was finally over for more than
120 young scientists – 16 to 20 years old –
from 35 countries gathered in Moscow at the Bauman University
to compete in the 17th European Union Contest for Young
Scientists. After judging the 78 projects exhibited
there, the winners were called forward in a thrilling
award ceremony that kept everyone in suspense until
the very last minute. This year, first prizes went to
teams from Germany, Spain and Switzerland for original
projects in the areas of fluid dynamics, a possible
new species in Gran Canaria and preventing urinary tract
infections from catheters. (See attachment for details.)

- Cream
of Europe's Young Scientists meet in Moscow
 
On Sunday 18 September,
some 126 young people from 35 countries – the
cream of Europe’s young scientists plus guests
from the USA, Japan and China – will meet in Moscow
at the Bauman University to compete in the 17th European
Union Young Scientist Contest. The contest will be opened
by the Vice-Premier of the Russian Government, Alexander
Zhukov. Over the next two days the 79 innovative projects
exhibited there will be judged by a distinguished jury
headed by Dr Ulf Merbold, the first European Space Agency
astronaut to go into space. On 21 September the prizes,
worth €28,500, will be awarded in the Council Hall
of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour complex.
This annual event is to encourage young people to pursue
their interest in science and embark on scientific careers.
