Greener waterborne transport

Although shipping uses only around one tenth of fuel (per tonne mile) of road transport, it could be greener still. This means reducing the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and other harmful substances such as sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrous oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).

Research priorities

  • Reduction of greenhouse gases, SOx, NOx and particulate matter, through:
    • Cleaner and more efficient power plants and improved propulsion systems
    • Improved hydrodynamics: reduction of drag and resistance
    • Development of after-treatment systems for exhaust gases
    • Use of alternative fuels and energy sources
    • Optimised retrofitting solutions
    • Optimisation of ship operations
  • Towards quieter seas; reduction of underwater noise
  • Combating invasive species
  • Post-accident cleaning, oil spills and hazardous substances
