Innovation is needed to ensure the durability of the shipbuilding sector in Europe and to strengthen the competitive position of European equipment manufacturers, ship owners and operators.

The shipbuilding sector in Europe employs over 500.000 people in some 300 shipbuilding and ship repair yards. The European marine equipment sector represents a market share around 36% of the estimated worldwide total value. A quarter of the world's tonnage (9,000 merchant vessels) sail under EU flags employing some 184,000 people, while inland shipping employs 43.000 people.
