Synergies between the transport component of Horizon 2020 and the cohesion policy 2014–2020

The programming period 2014–2020 facilitates synergies between Horizon 2020 — the research and innovation programme of the EU — and the European Structural and Investment Funds. Cohesion policy has a complementary role to play with regard to what Horizon 2020 is able to achieve mainly in terms of capacity building and helping to smooth the path from innovation conception to market deployment. Transport remains one of the main priorities of the cohesion policy for the programming period 2014–2020, while also being one of the major societal challenges identified by Horizon 2020.

The present report aims to inform national and regional transport research authorities and stakeholders about the possibility to combine funding offered by the research and cohesion programmes 2014–2020, to specify important notions such as the smart specialisation concept — allowing Member States and regions to concentrate investments on their comparative advantages and to boost the creation of cross-European value chains — as well as to recommend measures aiming to maximise the exploitation of synergies for transport research such as strategic coordination of policies and programmes and enhanced communication between actors, while indicating potential transport areas where synergies could bring added value.

Innovation for our future mobility

The projects showcased in this folder give you an overview of some of the results from European transport research and the impact they could have on our future society and your future mobility.

Tags: Competitiveness, Co-modality, Greening of transport, Safety and security, Urban mobility, Air, Multimodal, Rail, Road, Water

The Transport Directorate of the European Commission's DG for Research and Innovation strives to support excellent European research projects in the field of transport: projects that contribute to a cleaner, safer and smarter pan-European transport system and to a more competitive European continent. To this end, a budget of €4.16 billion is reserved under the Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7, from 2007-2013). The research funded ranges from wholly novel approaches to transport, to refining existing technology. It relies on hands-on experience from SMEs as much as on the knowledge of young academics and real life needs of manufacturers.

The projects showcased in this folder give you an overview of some of the results from European transport research and the impact they could have on our future society and your future mobility.

Tips for project coordinators
Communicating EU Transport Research

Communication, dissemination and exploitation — a team working on an FP7 project is called upon to take part in various activities that will bring their research to the attention of as many relevant people as possible.

With a little creativity, strategic communication efforts can help publicise your work in such a way that you will profit: through new business opportunities, a larger network or increased awareness about your work. This short guide will help you attain just that.

You will be given a clear overview of contractual requirements and their intended use. You will be inspired by some good practices from fellow project coordinators. And you will find a helpful checklist to help improve your own communication activities right from the start of your project.

The main recommendations of STAR 21 cover world markets, the operating environment, governance of civil aviation, European security and defence, and space capabilities. In many of these areas, for example the coordination of civil aeronautics research and the regulation of civil aviation, solid progress has already been made or will be achieved through the implementation of measures already proposed. In other areas, for example defence, space and the level and structure of research and technology in all market segments, which are vital for the development of industry, early decisions are required to avert a closing off of policy options for the future.
