25th/ 26th February 2013 -Workshop on Aviation Research Infrastructures in Europe

Appropriate research and testing infrastructures are essential for the competitiveness of Europe's aviation industry and also for the aviation related public research needs in Europe. An Independent Expert Group (IEG) had identified criteria for aviation research infrastructures that are strategic and important for Europe.

On 25th/ 26th February 2013 the Aeronautics ERA-Net AirTN and the Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe (ACARE) organise a Workshop on Aviation Research Infrastructures in Europein Brussels in co-operation with the DG RTD–Aeronautics Unit of the European Commission.

The objectives of this Workshop are to address the needs of aviation stakeholders for the availability and capabilities of aviation research and testing infrastructures in Europe and to inform about initiatives on Member States' and European level. The findings of the IEG will be presented.

The event addresses all aviation stakeholders, such as national and European authorities, agencies, industry, research institutions and academics.

Workshop on Aviation Research Infrastructures in Europe

"Aeronautics Research & Testing Infrastructures – Key for Europe's Competitiveness in Aviation"

Followed by the ACARE Working Group 5 Meeting

Monday, 25th Feb. – Tuesday, 26th Feb. 2013

at the European Commission, Covent Garden, COV2 15/SDR 1, Place Rogier 16, 1210 Brussels

Background:

This Workshop is organised by the ACARE WG 5 (Research, Infrastructure, Education & Workforce) together with the European Commission and the Aeronautics ERA-Net AirTN.

Aviation research and testing infrastructures were specifically addressed in Europe's Vision for Aviation 'Flightpath 2050'.

The related section of the Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda(SRIA) on Aviation Research and Testing Infrastructures was developed by the ACARE Working Group 5.

An Independent Expert Group (IEG) was set up to reflect on criteria for identifying strategic and important aviation research infrastructures of Europe and possible ways of their funding.

With respect to wind tunnels some industries and some wind tunnel operators have sent their views as individual inputs.

Workshop Objectives:

- learn and discuss about the findings of the Independent Expert Group (IEG)

- learn about initiatives on Member States' and European level.

- involve all aviation stakeholders, incl. national authorities, agencies, industry (air transport and aeronautics) and research institutions on identifying and discussing future needs of research infrastructures

- identify the needs of aviation stakeholders for the availability and capabilities of aviation research and testing infrastructures in Europe

Participants

Senior representatives and experts from users and operators of aviation research and testing infrastructures including industry, aviation operators, research institutions and academics

Public authority representatives from Member States and the European organisations

Expected Outcome

A feed-back on future actions and initiatives for the implementation of the SRIA

Proposals for the next steps for the implementation of the aspects of the new SRIA

Discussion, identification and arguments for the next steps to implement the SRIA Research and Testing infrastructure pillar
