Alkaptonuria (AKU) is a rare but often debilitating disease caused by a genetic mutation. It can lead to a severe and early-onset form of osteoarthritis and can also cause heart problems. It is a disease for which there is no licensed treatment. The DevelopAKUre research project is investigating a highly promising drug, which could be licensed as a treatment as soon as 2018.
The EuroSyStem project aimed to increase the understanding of stem cells and how they function in maintaining and repairing tissues. It brought together complementary biological and computational expertise to study the characteristics of normal and abnormal stem cells. In addition, EuroSyStem sought to provide a framework of cooperation for European researchers working in this field.
