This activity supports environmental and climate policies and the competitiveness of European environment-related industries and businesses.
EU funding in 2012
€ 292.81 million
It contributes to the Europe 2020 Flagship Initiatives "Innovation Union" and "Resource Efficient Europe", as well as to a climate policy that supports a competitive low-carbon economy by 2050 and to the Commission's environmental policy.
Measures included closer-to-market initiatives (e.g. demonstration projects), fewer prescriptive calls for proposals targeting SMEs, leaving more room for new business models and innovative products, processes and solutions. Support is also provided to the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) and for the establishment of the Intergovernmental science policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
The BONUS Public-Public Partnership aimed at tackling environmental and societal challenges related to the Baltic Sea, adopted its management plan and concluded an Implementing Agreement. Calls for proposals were launched on 'viable ecosystem' and 'innovation'. The Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) on 'Climate' and 'Cultural Heritage and Global Change' prepared their joint Strategic Research Agendas. A new JPI on 'Water challenges' has just started.
