Socio-economic Sciences and the humanities

Today's research defines tomorrow's societal priorities

Socio-economic sciences and the humanities, which address issues like employment, education, migration and integration, affect the lives of EU citizens and Europe's role in the world. Research in this field is essential in order to learn more about European societies. It also provides a basis for informed policy priorities.

In 2010, the EU marked the European year for combating poverty and social exclusion. DG Research and Innovation collaborated with the Spanish and Belgian presidencies of the EU to organise three conferences on science and poverty. In the context of the current economic and social crisis, such debates might result in the proposal of future actions under the new Europe 2020 'European Platform against Poverty' flagship initiative.

In cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee, DG Research and Innovation also ran a major conference on 'New and Growing Inequalities: a challenge for the social, economic and democratic development of the European Union'. The aim was to bring the negative impacts of widening inequalities in Europe to the attention of policy-makers.
