Environmental protection goes hand-in-hand with economic prosperity and social cohesion, as underlined in the EU's renewed sustainable development strategy and the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.
In 2010, EU research activities on the environment coordinated and integrated national efforts and fostered multidisciplinary networks, which are essential to optimise the Union's future action, notably in the context of the EU climate and energy package and the Europe 2020 flagship initiatives on resource-efficient Europe and the Innovation Union. Specific efforts were made to provide sound knowledge to ensure that new EU initiatives and follow-up actions are based on informed choices.
