As recalled by President Juncker in his State of the Union address, “Europe is a continent where nearly everyone has at one time been a refugee. The current refugee and migration challenge is the largest since the 1940s with unprecedented numbers of asylum seekers arriving at Europe's borders.
Migration Research Platform encompasses activities under the Framework Programme on Migration and Mobility. Migration and mobility also occur within the EU. Free movement is a fundamental principle of the European single market and a fundamental right of European citizens. Since the 2004 and 2007 enlargements and with the lifting in 2014 of the last transitional restrictions on free movement, intra-EU mobility has increased. In 2013, 1.2 million people (with EU citizenship) moved across the EU's internal borders.
Europe thus faces diverse types of migration, which attests to the fact that 'mixed migration' is the new norm, where migration flows as well as motivations to migrate are diverse and changing in nature.
For policy responses to be sound, a substantiated understanding of the phenomena surrounding migration is needed. Socio-economic research on migration contributes to the evidence base on which such policies are developed. Since 1994, approx. 80 projects on migration have been funded within the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Framework Programme.
This research has studied different aspects of the migration phenomenon, including immigrant integration, temporary/circular migration, trans-nationalism, migration and gender relations, migration and development, migration flows, migration data and statistical modelling, diversity, economic impact of immigration, and transnational families.
