Shared visions, common research futures

Editorial

“We need to think beyond Lisbon, we need to think in the long-term and make decisions which will be in line with a long-term approach. This is not present enough in today's daily discussions”. This was the message Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potočnik gave during the dissemination conference “Key Technologies for Europe” in September 2005. The Commissioner also welcomed the recommendations of the report of the expert group on 'Key Technologies for Europe', agreeing with the conclusion that Europe must develop a research agenda 'beyond the Lisbon strategy'. An overview of the conference main results as well as the outcomes, conclusions and recommendations of the work of the expert group “Key Technologies for Europe” is given in the first part of this issue.

Key Technologies

The Expert Group

“We need to think beyond Lisbon, we need to think in the long-term and make decisions which will be in line with a long-term approach. This is not present enough in today's daily discussions” was the message the Science and Research Commissioner, Janez Potočnik gave during his opening speech of the conference “Key Technologies for Europe”, welcoming thus the recommendations of the expert group’s report.

Dissemination conference

The outcome of the “Key Technologies for Europe” expert group's work was debated in a mixed group of experts and decision-makers during a conference held in Brussels on 19-20 September 2005. This dissemination conference concluding the work of the expert group was a success with the high level of 150 participants.

The future of key research actors

An expert group on “The future of key research actors in the ERA” was set up in 2005 with the purpose to contribute to European RTD policy with a view to a better performance and effectiveness of the European Research System. It will develop a foresight perspective on the key actors who help shape the development of the European System: universities, public research institutions, enterprises, researchers, civil society, national and regional governmental bodies.

Cognitive science

“Europe, which holds a large part of the responsibility and merit for launching cognitive science and fuelling it with some of its key insights, has of late been lagging behind the US and Japan, and must make a very resolute effort to catch up and remain in the lead, in the face of the increased level of competition brought about by China, which is giving cognitive neuroscience top priority (Andler , 2005)”.

Social Sciences & Humanities

A European Conference on “Social sciences and humanities in Europe: New challenges, new opportunities” was held in Brussels on 12-13 December 2005. This major European conference addressed the broader strategic context of the development of social sciences and humanities in Europe, and explored policy options at European and international levels.
