On 7-9 October 2009, the European Commission and CONICYT Chile organised in Santiago, Chile, a workshop on the collective challenges ahead of Latin America and the Caribbean in the domain of environment. This is one of the practical outcomes of the new strategy for international cooperation set up in the programme "Socio-Economic Sciences and the Humanities" of the 7th European Research Framework Programme. This strategy addresses grand challenges in world regions rather than ad-hoc issues at bilateral level and thus reinforces the geopolitical approach favoured by the Directorate "Science, Economy and Society" around the development of a multi-polar world.
The opening plenary session was attended by 60 participants representing 11 different LAC and 5 different European nationalities. Then, four small working groups of 10 experts worked a whole day on the following issues: a) social and economic uses of environment, b) poverty and inequality, c) institutional weaknesses and the role of the State, d) collective actions and the role of elites.
During the last day, the participants made a thorough debriefing of their team work and discussed in plenary the potential for further EU-LACC cooperation in environmental research in social sciences and the humanities.
