DG RTD, BEPA and CEPR jointly organise a policy conference on "Global economic governance: systemic challenges, institutional responses, and the role of the new actors"

17/02/2009, Brussels, Berlaymont Building, Halstein Room

This conference, to be introduced by Commissioner Janez Potocnik, will discuss three urgent global challenges - to do with the international financial system, international macroeconomics, and the global trade regime. It will consider the implications of these challenges for global institutions and for global governance, and it will examine the role for emerging market economies in developing the appropriate global governance responses. It will also assess the role which Europe might play in promoting the necessary changes in governance. The conference is bringing together speakers from G8 countries, from the BRICs, and from international institutions to discuss these challenges. Three sessions will be organised: "The Global Financial System", "Macroeconomic Imbalances" and a session on "The Global Trading System", followed by a concluding policy panel discussion. It is being organised by Directorate General Research and the Bureau of European Policy Advisors of the European Commission, in conjunction with the collaborative project "Politics, Economics, and Global Governance: The European Dimension" (PEGGED), a project funded by the Seventh EU Framework Programme for Research.
