Research for sustainable urbanisation - Turning challenges into opportunities
Thematic side-event to the Mayor's Forum organised on 19-20/09/2012

19 September 2012, Brussels, Belgium
Committee of the Regions, rue Belliard 101, room JDE 70

The event will discuss the research dimension of the EU-China Partnership for Sustainable Urbanisation through the contributions of three initiatives supported by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation:

  • The URBACHINA project funded by the FP7 Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities Theme: Sustainable Urbanisation in China: Historical and Comparative Perspectives, Mega-trends towards 2050
  • The Research Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe,
  • The European Energy Research Alliance Joint Programme for Smart Cities.

The event will delve into the issue of sustainable urban development in Europe and in China and it will present new approaches to addressing the challenge of urbanisation both from a technological and a socio-economic perspective. Innovative systemic and integrative solutions will be highlighted, ranging from scientific foresight and evaluation to new methodologies and implementation, with a focus on the energy field. The event will also aim to strengthen the EU-China collaboration on sustainable urbanisation in the research and policy domains, as well as to create an effective science-policy dialogue between actors from the two sides. The event will be organised by above-mentioned initiatives and the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation.

The event is a part of the EU-China Mayors' Forum, to be held on 19 and 20 September 2012 in Brussels with the participation of Prime Minister Wen and European Commission's President Barroso. This Forum is the first annual flagship event of the EU-China Urbanisation Partnership. It will get together EU and Chinese mayors, local decision-makers, city planners, business and NGOs willing to share experience in moving towards sustainable, integrated and efficient solutions.
