Policy makers and societies are facing pressing trade-offs between socio-economic and environmental objectives in the globally integrated world while economic growth also induces growth in the use of non-renewable resources. In particular, increasing international trade and fast technological development create a tension between economic growth and increasing inequality between countries as well as between various classes within society.
