The Development of European Identities: Policy and Research Issues

9 February 2012, European Commission Representation in Belgium,
Rue Archimède 73, Brussels, Belgium

Is Europe evolving to a new distinct sense of identity or identities?

This conference addressed the extremely timely question of the Development of European identities, especially in the current context of financial, economic and social crises. It was centred around EU-funded research projects in the field of European identity/identities and brought together those currently active in European identity/identities research and those involved in policy-making at the European level.

The conference addressed two main issues:

  • Whether there is a common European identity or several diverging European identities emerging, and what shape(s) it/they take(s)?
  • What (policy and research) implications the development of a European identity/European identities have for the European Union?

This conference was co-organised by the European Commission and Prof. Robert Miller from Queens University, Belfast.
