"Including education for promoting social inclusion - the case of migrants and minorities"
INCLUDE-ED policy prospects Belgian country seminar

27 September 2011, Centre for European Policy Studies, place du Congrès 1, Brussels, Belgium

The INCLUD-ED project is a five year integrated project which aims to analyse educational actions that contribute to social cohesion and educational actions that lead to social exclusion. It does so within the context of the European knowledge based society, and provides key elements and lines of action to improve educational and social policy in the EU.

The project concentrates on describing the elements that can influence school failure or success and their relationship with other areas of society: housing, health, employment, and social and political participation. There is a specific focus on social groups which are vulnerable to being socially excluded: migrants and minorities. The project explores how educational results influence employment opportunities, access to housing and health and participation in public spaces.

As part of the final phase of the project, country seminars with policy makers are organized in each of the participating Member States. The aim of the seminar is to discuss and disseminate the results obtained in relation to connecting educational policies to other areas of social policy. More specifically, successful mixed interventions identified previously will be presented and the steps required to implement them will be evaluated and discussed. The strategies addressed in this seminar mainly focus on the inclusion of migrants and minorities as this is where the EU's input is more dynamic. The Belgian situation will be put into a European perspective by giving a voice to EU policy makers and practitioners along Belgian practitioners and policy makers.
