Welcome to the new look SME Update

Happy New Year. Our format is changing from being a static quarterly newsletter to that of an interactive, online resource for all SMEs eager to learn more about research opportunities in Europe. Being online also makes us more environmentally friendly. You print off what you need, when you need it.

No small and medium-sized enterprise can afford to sit on its laurels and cut back on research. Many SMEs in Europe have international potential. Participating in European projects to develop new technology for creating exciting new products and services provides SMEs with an important opportunity to learn about international markets and build the trans-national connectivity to supply into them.

In our interview with the Commission's new SME unit head, Dr Bernd Reichert, we can see how the Seventh Framework Programme, FP7, is offering a range of exciting opportunities for SMEs eager to grow and compete more effectively.

There's also a great deal of money on the table. Under the Cooperation programme, SMEs will benefit from around 15 per cent of the overall FP7 budget of just over €50.5 billion.

Participating in FP7 carries with it many potential benefits for SMEs: up to 75 per cent of the cost of undertaking research and development that you might not otherwise be able to do; and opportunities to be part of a pan-European consortia sharing knowledge, skills and expertise. You can also raise your profile and access new business markets.

This is an exciting time to be a growing SME with ambitions to compete in dynamic new markets. SME Update will be right up there with you, bringing all the latest news and insight.
