Energy (non-nuclear)

1. Its overall objective and rationale: Research conducted under this theme has the overall objective of making the current energy system more sustainable, with more diverse energy sources, greater use of renewables and addressing the challenges of security of supply and climate change. The Theme’s objectives [ 287 Kb] can be seen in this Council Decision document.

2. Link to sustainable development: Energy holds the key to reconciling the often opposing dimensions of sustainable development, a vision of progress that links economic development, protection of the environment and social justice. This chapter of the Vision papers [ 196 Kb] describes the articulation between (non-nuclear) energy research and sustainable development challenges.
