Dunja Mladenic works at the Department of Intelligent
Systems of the J. Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia
since 1987, first as an undergraduate student and
since 1992 as a researcher. She graduated in Computer
Science at Faculty of Information and Computer Science,
University of Ljubljana and continued as a PhD student
focused on Artificial Intelligence.
She got her MSc
and PhD
in Computer Science at University of Ljubljana in
1995 and 1998 respectively. Most of her research work
is connected with the study and development of machine
learning and data mining techniques and their application
on real-world problems from different areas e.g.,
medicine, pharmacology, manufacturing, economy. Her
current research focuses on using machine learning
in data analysis, with particular interest in learning
from Text and the Web including personal intelligent
agents. She was visiting School of Computer Science,
Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, as
a visiting researcher in 1996-1997 and as a visiting
faculty in 2000-2001. During the visits she cooperated
on several research projects related to Text Mining:
"Personal WebWatcher: using machine learning
for better Web browsing", "WebWatcher",
"CorpusBuilder: automatically building web search
queries to construct language-specific corpora",
"The World Wide Knowledge Base (Web->KB)",
and also some projects related to Data Mining: "Data
Mining on the market basket analysis", "Data
Mining in Biomedicine on the AHRQ Bioterrorism".
Dunja Mladenic is coordinating EU
Fifth RTD Framework Programme project "Data Mining
and Decision Support for business competitiveness:
A European virtual enterprise (Sol-Eu-Net)"
involving 12 partners from 7 countries (2000-2002),
inside which she is also responsible for the area
of Development of an open information source on the
Web including Text and Web Mining applications. She
is management board member of EU IST project "The
European Knowledge Discovery Network of Excellence

at J.Stefan Institute for EU project "A Forum
for the Exchange of European Knowledge Management
Expertise (KMForum)" (responsible at IJS: Marko
Grobelnik and Dunja Mladenic), (2001-2003) and a tow-partner
RTD project "Natural Language Processing for
Text Classification" for Microsoft Research,
Ltd. (responsible: Dunja Mladenic and Marko Grobelnik),
(2000-2002). She was recently involved in several
other national research projects including: "Analysis
of large text data-sets", "Development of
Digital Publishing with Distance Learning Support",
"Reflection in Machine Learning", "Slovenian
Economy in Transition towards Market Economy".
She has published several papers
in refereed conferences and journals. She has served
in the program committee of different international
conferences (e.g., International Conference on Machine
Learning, SIAM Conference on Data Mining, International
Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery).
She co-organized several international conferences
and workshops including ICML-99 International Conference
on Machine Learning, AWAMIDA-99 Conference on Analysis,
Warehousing and Mining the data, SiKDD-2001 conference,
Information Society Conferences (IS-1999, IS-2000,
IS-2001), Workshop on Machine Learning in Text Data
Analysis (at ICML-99)
, KDD-2000
Workshop on Text Mining, IEEE ICDM-2001 Workshop on
