Science is part of almost every aspect of our lives. Although we rarely think about it, science makes extraordinary things possible. At the flick of a switch, we have light and electricity. When we are ill, science helps us get better. It tells us about the past, helps us with the present, and creates ways to improve our future.
A policy brief, based on the discussions held at the GAP2 workshop 'Putting the Science into Regionalization: Participatory Approaches in the New, Regionlized CFP', has now been authored by GAP2 scientists Dr. Steven Mackinson and Dr. Martin Pastoors. This is now available to read, and in PDF format, on the GAP2 website.
Alongside the post-event policy briefing, you will find links to pre-workshop materials and, furthermore, to a detailed workshop report.
The Report provides a synopsis of the first ever DG Research and
Innovation citizen consultation process to gather ideas on how to
advance urban waste research in Europe.
This initiative, launched by the Science with and for Society Unit of DG RTD, was implemented by the ECSITE network of science centres and museums, from January 2013 through to June 2014. The outcome of the initiative led to the definition of 5 waste-related topics under the Horizon2020 2014-2015 calls for proposals of Societal Challenge 5 - Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials - for an expected EC financial contribution of approximately 116 Million EUR.
For more information on these waste calls see: http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/

The Innovation Union was placed at the heart of the Europe 2020 strategy in 2010 with the aim to foster Europe's capacity to innovate. Innovation is indeed considered essential to preserve and improve Europe's competitiveness and its ability to create jobs and to tackle societal challenges.
Four years after its launch, this Staff Working Document (SWD) takes stock of how it has been implemented and what first results it has delivered, keeping in mind that the Innovation Union is a ten years long strategy.
