Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Germany found that 15 species of bats all tried to drink from smooth plates because of the way these surfaces reflect the echolocation calls of these flying mammals.

European scientists have discovered that human expansion rather than climate change was the chief reason why cave bears became extinct in Europe around 24 000 years ago. They claim increased competition between humans and bears for land and shelter — in particular for the caves used by the bears for hibernation during the winter months — triggered the decline in cave bear population levels. Conversely, the brown bear has survived until today because it did not depend so heavily on the cave habitat. The findings were published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution.

But when was the beginning? Statisticians have calculated that the mother of all human beings, the so-called 'mitochondrial Eve' (mtEve), lived on Earth about 200 000 years ago. The team from Poland and the US based its estimation on the most comprehensive statistical examination ever conducted to date that included genetic models and assumptions based on human migration and proliferation.
New research has revealed that the so-called Flower (Fwe) protein has the power to mark weak cells for eradication, allowing fitter cells to remain and flourish. Fwe, a cell membrane protein present in multicellular animals, has authority during cell competition to deem some cells 'winners' and others 'losers'.
Archaeologists in Hungary have discovered the remains of a small-horned dinosaur that was previously thought to live only in North America and Asia. Members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) believe that the ceratopsian made its way to Hungary from Asia by island-hopping across the ancient Tethys Ocean to reach what now constitutes Europe. The find, presented in the journal Nature, is being heralded as highly significant and has prompted calls for a re-examination of the biogeography of time.
