Success Stories - Reducing forest-fire danger and damage on a European scale

About one million hectares of forests, which corresponds to one third the size of Belgium, are destroyed by fire every year in the Mediterranean basin. Forests are an important economic resource in that region, and the loss of forests weighs on the economies of the affected countries, especially in North Africa where a warming of 2 degrees Celsius and decreasing rainfall has been recorded. It is expected that climate change in North Africa will substantially increase the yearly losses to fire.

Even 10 seconds can make a difference. When Japan was hit by the earthquake in 2011, early-warning systems were in place, and within seconds even the high-speed "bullet" trains stopped.
About half of Europe is also a high-risk earthquake area, especially Mediterranean countries like Greece, Italy, and also other regions around the Black Sea.

On March 11 2011, the world watched in awe at the sheer destructive power of the tsunami that struck Japan. The tsunami began following an earthquake off the east coast of Japan, which was recorded at 9.0 on the Richter scale - the largest quake ever to hit Japan. The ensuing tsunami that was created swept across cities and farmland in the northern part of the country, killing as many as 20 000 people. In the wake of the tsunami, however, another disaster emerged, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, which has been referred to by some as the largest nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. Scientists have highlighted this disaster as a wake-up call, and one team of scientists has assessed 'potentially dangerous' areas that are home to completed nuclear plants or those under construction.

Events - International Conference on "Integrated Approaches for Volcanic Risk Management" - 11-12 September 2012, Hohenheim University Stuttgart, Germany

Following the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction recommendations and starting from shared existing knowledge and practices, this conference aims at presenting innovative tools and integrated cost effective methodologies to mitigate risks from various hazards on active volcanoes (prevention, crisis management and recovering). The focus is more particularly put on integrating tools. This concerns interdisciplinary integration between different domains (e.g. inputs of social approaches in risk mapping methodologies) but also integration between the three different phases of risk management (e.g. Information System designed to be used both for risk mapping and crisis management). This conference serves as final workshop of the FP7 MIAVITA project. End of registration / deadline for submission of abstracts: 31 July 2012

The EWENT project dealt with extreme Weather impacts on European networks of transport. At this final conference the EWENT researchers and researchers of related projects will present their findings on:1. What are the extreme weather phenomena that are most harmful to transport system and what and where are the biggest impacts?2. How these phenomena are going to change in pace with expected climate change?3. What are the total costs induced to transport system by extreme weather?4. What European parts – geographically, mode-wise – are most vulnerable to extreme weather?5. How can we prepare ourselves, what are the means and the tools?
