Actually there are three elements in this. The first has to be demand driven. The problem of social innovation historically was that we used to do research for the sake of research. We don't have this leisure anymore, we have to focus on the meagre funds that are available on more demand driven approaches. The second issue is that there has been a lot of applicable technologies and innovation that have been developed but we lack the marketing arm for it and I think we should have some sort of regional major programmes linking all the 'bric-a-brac' of not only the European Commission programmes, but also member states programmes and all the wealth that has been generated to be utilised for the better of both Europe and the southern Mediterranean.

It is an opportunity to internationalise, to get in contact with other organisations that would otherwise be very difficult to get in touch with. It is an opportunity to access
programmes for reasearch and new orientations that are much more global that the ones you may get on a national level. And finally, having the capacities of the different countries, of the different centres, researchers, is a win-win situation for everybody. So I am absolutely in favor of that.

Well I think it is necessary first of all, it is not so much if we are going to make a big or a small change, it is needed, we really need to grow into technologic area with more success. What I do hope is that also the outcome of research projects for example would be better disseminated, better understood, and better shared amongst European people. I think there is a lot of very good brains, of great initiatives but they do not tend to materialize, they don't go to production, they remain really theorical. The results are not efficiently broadcasted, and it is something we have to promote and increase in the future. I also think we really need to address all the possible sectors in term of research and innovation. What I mean is that there are certain research areas which are not developed enough and again I'm coming back, to be more pragmaticwhen we subside those projects for example.

I think as a Jordanian it is hard for me to answer but I will answer from my point of view, if i was a European. Anything linked with the economic crisis has to be related to the root. We have to look deeply at the main problem and work to solve it. I think everybody is looking at the surface and they don't look at the root. I guess they have to locate where is the main field that will bring money and bring more jobs, and save Europe or Mediterranean countries from their crisis.
Huge question! To my view, we need more decentralization. This crisis shows the failure of centralized models, pyramidal, with strong hierarchy I firmly believe in the capacity of new technologies and the Internet to create more direct, more horizontal, more decentralized models. It is slowly emerging. Unfortunatly, not yet in politics, which is one of the last frontiers in that matter. But it is definitly towards this model that we are going, I hope that Europe will go towards more decentralization and will let democracy be more participative, more direct. using new technologies to do that.

I think that public funded
research should always be open source. And I think thiscollides a little bit with the idea of the current move for innovation, which is based on registrating idea and try to profit
from it. And I have seen a bunch of cases in Sweden
that should be putting an alarm
on how we are doing things.
For example, a publicly funded PhD, created a small company, a small startup. They created a software, and sold it for x million dollars and this
close amount to Apple, an American company. We see this happening
again and again. So we see European funding going to countries, from countries to individuals, individuals sign the thing, and then we are locked out of that technology.
So I think that the first thing,is that research publicly funded should actually be left to
the public domaine. And that will create a different
kind of innovative landscape, where companies could compete
in the best service on the ideas. And not like we are right now,
where companies are just fighting to have the control of the idea,
instead of making the best for the users and consumers in general.

I think basically raising the level. If you take a look and if you compare
generations, when I was a kid,
to have a book was a great thing,
we had to struggle for information.
Now information is available
for everybody. What people before would learned or would know how to do basic stuffs, now as we saw
in the videos, kids of tomorrow really
know how to use an Ipad,
how to develop a small software
by the age of fourth.
Maybe by the age of 20 they will do
bigger things, so knowledges
are becoming skill.
So I think knowledges in the hands
of more people will lead to a better good for everybody. We saw that
with the Arab revolutions for example, when freedom speech had been given to many people, the voice became louder. I think it's gonna be
the same for knowledges,
they will become bigger and bigger, it is exponential. The second idea is keeping in mind citizens responsibility, and influence
politician to keep the better good
in mind. I think research will be used
by governments for the better good,
rather than for other purposes.
I think this is happening in Europe,
I hope it will happen elsewhere.
