This conference will address this extremely timely question for Europe and the European Commission, especially in the current context of financial, economic and social crises. It will be centred around EU-funded research projects in the field of European identity/identities and will bring together those currently active in European identity/identities research and those involved in policy-making at the European level. NGOs and citizens are also welcome to join in and to voice their opinions on the suggested topics. The conference will address two main issues:

• Whether there is a common European identity or several diverging European identities emerging, and what shape(s) it/they take(s)?
• What (policy and research) implications the development of a European identity/European identities have for the European Union?

This conference is co-organised by the European Commission and Prof. Robert Miller from Queens University, Belfast.
If you would like to attend, please register by e-mail before 6 February 2012 to: rtd-ssh-events@ec.europa.eu. Due to the limited capacity of the venue, reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

In today’s knowledge society, education can act as a powerful resource to achieve the European goal of social cohesion. Similarly to the field of medicine in which only those treatments that have been proven to be effective when curing a particular disease are implemented, there is a need to identify those educational and social actions that research has shown can reverse social and educational exclusion. In the last 5 years, INCLUD-ED Project researchers have gathered evidences that demonstrate which are the actions that overcome inequalities. They will be presented in the Final INCLUD-ED Conference.

Experts believe the number of smartphone users worldwide will top the 1 billion mark by 2013. Now an international team of scientists has taken advantage of smartphone technology to examine the mental processes involved in how humans remember, think, speak and solve problems. Presented in the journal PLoS ONE, the findings demonstrate how these tiny tools can dramatically change cognitive science research.
