The 2012 e-Freight conference will be organised by EC funded projects, all studying and creating solutions for the e-Freight areas of information exchange in planning, monitoring, invoicing, compliance and reporting for secure mulitmodal freight transport. These projects will also present themselves and their results at the conference.

From Knowledge to Action will bring together over 2,000 Arctic and Antarctic researchers, policy- and decision-makers, and a broad range of interested parties from academia, industry, non-government, education and circumpolar communities including indigenous peoples.

The European Commission will participate with a stand and inform about its related projects.

Around 150 companies and institutions from around the globe will showcase a full spectrum of hydrogen/fuel cell-related products, many of them participating in FP6 and FP7 research. The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking PPP will also be present.

The Transport Research Arena (TRA) 2012 serves to enable the exchange of knowledge among those who play an active role in the transport sector. TRA 2012 will focus on all aspects of all surface transport modes with the exception of overseas shipping. It provides experts from different disciplines with a forum for creative discussions about the future of transport at a location where Greek philosophers debated the burning issues of the day some 25 centuries ago. 

The main theme of TRA 2012 is 'Sustainable mobility through innovation'.

The Danish Presidency of the European Council invites research institutions, representatives from businesses and NGO’s, policymakers and civil servants to come together at the conference ‘Science in Dialogue’ to discuss the relationship between research, innovation and the wider society.
‘Science in Dialogue’ will focus on how a strengthened relationship between science, innovation and society may be realized in the future. The conference will present high-level speakers and draw upon the participants’ ideas, opinions and suggestions in an interactive conference format.

The conference will discuss solutions, at all scales, to move societies on to a sustainable pathway. It will provide scientific leadership towards the 2012 UN Rio +20 conference.

The goal of the 6^th World Water Forum is to tackle the challenges our world is facing and to bring water high on all political agendas. There will be no sustainable development while the water issues remain unsolved. Everywhere on the planet, for all and everyone, the Right to Water (recognised by 189 states at the UN one year ago) must be guaranteed and implemented.

Although significant achievements have been made in reducing fatalities and injuries in traffic accidents over the last decade, continued efforts are needed to bring the numbers down further. Motivated by this, the CASPER and EPOCh projects will address some aspects of child safety in vehicles.

It aimed first of all to increase the reliability of flooding simulation tools in design and onboard use, by establishing modeling principles and uncertainty bounds. Secondly, it looked to establish a method for instantaneous classification of the severity of ship flooding casualty. Its final results will be presented at this public seminar.

Speakers will include: Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, the EU Commissioner for Research and Innovation; Professor Tim Hunt, Nobel Laureate; Professor Donald Dingwell, Secretary General of the European Research Council and many other inspiring leaders in the field.

The scheme aims to support the development of relationships between MEPs and scientists to improve access to scientific advice and deepen scientists’ understanding of the role of science in policy-making.

During a week in Brussels (21-24 November), scientists will shadow their MEP as they go about their parliamentary business, attending committee meetings and meeting officials working in key policy areas such as the environment and energy. MEPs will then spend time with the scientists, visiting their research institution to experience how research is conducted in practice and meet their research colleagues.

This year, the Marie Curie Actions have been invited to participate in this pairing scheme.

The project:
In spring 2012, scientists of the EU-funded PEGASOS project will embark on a Europe-wide
research mission with a Zeppelin NT airship. The aim is to explore relationships between atmospheric chemistry and climate change. In 2012, measurement flights will take the research team to the Netherlands and then on to Italy. In 2013, the north-bound flight leads from Friedrichshafen, Germany, to Finland.

The workshop:
The scientists are currently carrying out a trial campaign to test different cabin layouts and measuring instruments for different experiments on the ground and in the air. During the workshop, journalists will have the opportunity to speak to the researchers about the campaign and the measuring techniques, and to see the equipment and how it is installed in the Zeppelin.

As participants in a publicly funded project, the HYMAR team want to share as much of their experience as possible.  ICOMIA’s first hybrid marine propulsion conference is the ideal platform for us to do this.

On 18 and 19 October, the European Patent Office and the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission will organise an IPR workshop for Marie Curie Fellows in Munich.

Organized by the Center for Cluster Development (CCD) of the Freie Universität Berlin in cooperation with Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, the conference will provide a perfect opportunity to present and disseminate information about methods and practices of planning research as well as the possibilities and consequences. The Researchers' Night offers the opportunity to discover research facilities that are usually not open to public (laboratories, research centres, museum collections, ...), use the most recent technologies and instruments with the guidance of scientists, participate in experiments, competitions and quizzes, watch demonstrations and simulations, exchange ideas and party with the researchers.

The session From student to researcher: The Marie Curie Actions will be chaired by Mr Jordi Curell Gotor, the Director responsible in DG-EAC for the entire Lifelong learning programme, and he will present the future policy dimension of the Programme. The Vice Chair of the Education and Culture Committee of the European Parliament Mr. Morten Lokkegaard (MEP) will be a guest Keynote speaker and participate in the official launch of the newly introduced Marie Curie Action: the European Industrial Doctorates (EID). In the second session, Mobility of researchers in Europe: An endeavour for all, Marie Curie Fellows will share their experience and present their projects, excellent results and lessons learned.

In addition, our Programme will be actively involved at the Exhibition stand of the EU "Youth on the move" (stand No 118) to respond the questions by visitors and give outreach presentations on the Marie Curie Actions.

The findings include:

• results of the pan-European public poll, conducted to investigate public views and understanding about climate change and the marine environment;
• main messages from a state-of-the-art overview of results and scientific outputs of marine climate change research in Europe.

The conference will be anticipated on the evening of 14 September with the premiere of the CLAMER documentary "Living with a warming ocean", filmed in seven European countries and focusing on the attitudes towards science communication regarding climate change and its impacts on marine waters.

The focus of the second workshop is on policy instruments to promote more sustainable food consumption.

This workshop, organised by INTARESE, HEIMTSA and 2-FUN (three collaborative research projects, funded by the European Commission through FP6), with the support of the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers of the European Commission, will showcase and discuss the IEHIA concept, methods, tools and worked examples the projects have been developing. This IEHIA wider framework and methodology is taking the tradition of risk assessment an important step further by considering not simply the risk assessment of environmental pollutants, but the full environmental health impacts of policies that affect health via the environment – whether or not an effect on health is the primary purpose of the policy.

This conference is aimed at analysing the main trends, tensions and possible transitions int he EuroMed region up to 2030.  It builds on the work performed by the EuroMed-2030 Expert Grouop established by the European Commission under the Foresight activity of the Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities (SSH theme) of teh 7th Research Framework Programme.

 

The main challenge is to take the specific interests of cultural heritage into account in this legislation. The conference 'Europe and heritage: a challenge. Towards a European heritage strategy' wants to make European policy makers aware of cultural heritage and the way in which it is very closely related to other policy areas. It wants to encourage all parties involved to cooperate on a European cultural heritage strategy by means of a declaration of intention.

In a Europe-wide contest held alongside the workshop, cartoonists are invited to draw their positive visions for biodiversity. It is in the spirit of this new conference series to attract researchers from a broad range of academic disciplines which are contributing in the fighting against harmful microorganisms, not only those more traditionally involved in this research area (microbiologists, biochemists, genetists, clinicians…), but also experimental and theoretical/computational chemists (rational design of antimicrobial compounds, chemical synthesis, analogs, surface modification of materials…), physicists  (radiation, nano-emulsions (surface tension), ultrasounds, antimicrobial materials, properties of nano-materials...) or engineers (technologies).

COP 10 will include a high-level ministerial segment organised by the host country in consultation with the Secretariat and the Bureau. The high‑level segment will take place from 27 to 29 October 2010.

The Knowledge Based Bio-Economy will play a key role for the new EU 2020 strategy: it will provide biological solutions for the food and energy crisis, for climate change mitigation and conservation of biodiversity through its key technology, industrial biotechnology. The conference will gather academic research experts, economists, industry, policy makers and non-governmental organizations to discuss a new European vision and action plan for the KBBE towards 2020.

• The need for innovation within European industry and major obstacles hindering innovation;
• Future perspectives for industry with newly developed manufacturing technologies, materials and nanotechnologies;
• The social, environmental sustainability and competitiveness perspectives of the European manufacturing industry.

In order to support the preparation of proposals, the European Commission's Research Directorate General will hold two 'Information Days' on 22 and 23 July 2010 in the Charlemagne building, rue de la Loi 170, in Brussels.

The aim of the two-day event is to inform potential researchers about FP7 and the new Transport Calls for Proposals under the ‘Co-operation’ Programme. Details will also be given on the main legal and procedural conditions and we will respond to your questions. Participants will also have the chance to get network with potential project partners.

Information boards will be available for participants to present their ideas at the Information Days in Brussels. These displays will be organised by the National Contact Points (NCPs) through the European Transport NCP Alliance (ETNA) initiative.

This first workshop in the series is dedicated to water-related risks. Jointly organised with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), it builds on the outcomes of the October 2009 workshop “Dialogue Among Scientific Community and Policy Stakeholders on Disaster Risk Reduction” organised by the Commission's Research Directorate-General and UNISDR. Reinforcing the exchanges among the scientific and policy communities in Europe, the event aims in particular at providing practical examples of how research can contribute to guide policy makers in investment decisions towards disaster risk reduction in order to implement the climate change adaptation agenda.

The second Major Workshop of the FP7 project WAKENET3-EUROPE will be the first opportunity to present the new SESAR development projects related to wake vortex since they have entered into their execution phases during the first half of 2010. 

The objectives of this workshop are to provide a platform for information exchange between aerospace professionals working on matters related to aircraft wake turbulence as well as to coordinate future activities towards achieving the ACARE Vision 2020, while taking into account wake turbulence safety. The following topics will be addressed: new air traffic management concepts and wake vortex (SESAR and NextGen), defining Safe Wake Turbulence Separations, Recategorisations and Wake Advisory & Warning Systems. 

The EU-China Science and Technology Week, organized as part of the European Union Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China, will bring together over 500 leading scientists, journalists and representatives of industry, academia and government from the European Union and China, to share knowledge, experience and aspirations.

The conference will address the latest developments in the Clean Sky programme, highlighting the major technical steps to be taken in the near future.

It is a unique opportunity for an update on Clean Sky and an information exchange with the stakeholders.

16 April: In the CLUSTHERM project the participating regions examined its thermal water utilization, prepared joint action plan and they give recommendations to the decision - makers on regional, national and European level.

Live demonstrations of cutting-edge satellite navigation applications and a three-day
conference in Brussels promoting the use of EGNOS and Galileo will be part of the
launch of this year’s European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC).

Galileo Application Days, 3-5 March, kicks off the competition with a conference and an
‘Application Village’, where the demonstrations will occur. The annual ESNC competition, or
‘Galileo Masters’ as it is also known, is designed to stimulate commercial applications using
Europe’s satellite navigation programmes.

The event is being organised by the JRC's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) and the Spanish Centre for Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) under the auspices of the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council and also forms part of the Industrial Research Monitoring Analysis (IRMA) activities of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and Directorate-General for Research.
