A histological section of mouse embryo ovary is observed under a microscope. Specific proteins in the tissue are highlighted using an immunohistochemistry protocol where fluorescent markers bind to specific antibodies. From the resulting image it is possible to characterise the gonad’s sex and stage of differentiation. This research is being conducted at the Institute of Human Genetics (Institut de Génétique Humaine) in Montpellier (FR) by a team of nine, including six women and also headed by a woman. This observation was made by biologist Brigitte Moniot, who is researching the expression of genes and proteins during gonad development and formation.
