Development of monitoring guidelines and modelling tools for environmental effects from Mediterranean aquaculture

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-1999-31779
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date: 01-10-2000
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 2,135,462 EUR
EC Contribution: 870,000 EUR
Scientific Officer: Dominique LEVIEIL
Research topic: 5.1.2. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

Abstract:
The project will address section 5.1.2 of the work programme, focusing on methods and strategies to assess the effects of interactions between the environment and aquaculture, the influence on faunal distributions, and interactions between wild and farmed organisms in the Mediterreanean.

1. Undertake a review of procedures used in the regulation and monitoring of mariculture in Norway, Scotland and elsewhere to be used as the basis for creating an appropriate set of protocols, monitoring systems and techniques for the control of mariculture in the Mediterranean.

2. Carry out a field research programme to provide appropriate data on the environmental impact of marine cage fish farms in a range of conditions in the eastern Mediterranean.

3. Develop a predictive model to simulate the environmental response to differing stocking levels and feeding regimes. This will be designed as a management tool for industry and regulatory authorities. More information can be found at www.meramed.com.
