Environmental, nutritional and neuroendocrine regulation of skin coloration in the red porgy (Pagrus pagrus), towards the development of natural hue in cultured populations

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-1999-31629
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date: 01-10-2000
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 1,330,324 EUR
EC Contribution: 995,390 EUR
Scientific Officer: Dominique LEVIEIL
Research topic: 5.1.2. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

Abstract:
The red porgy is one of the most popular sparids in the Mediterranean region and the Atlantic coast. Initial commercial trials have already been performed in several Mediterranean fish farms. The aim of the project is to resolve the main problem of moving towards commercial production, i.e. the discoloration of skin observed in cultured fish. Objectives/expected results: to define red porgy's requirements (rearing conditions, diet) towards the development of natural hue; to understand the physiological basis of colour change; and to analyse the acceptability of the developed product within the traditional and developing markets. This will be achieved through an integrated and multi-disciplinary approach (environmental, nutritional, neuroendocrine impact on skin colour - industrial application - market analysis). The project will lead to the development of a new product for aquaculture and will contribute to the diversification of production.
