RAMFIC - Sustainability, product safety and quality in cereals: development of novel quantitative models for risk assessment for mycotoxigenic Fusarium species

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-1999-31517
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date: 01-10-2000
Duration: 48 months
Total cost: 3,150,930 EUR
EC Contribution: 2,019,403 EUR
Scientific Officer: Massimo BURIONI
Research topic: 5.1.1. Sustainable agriculture/Plant Systems

Abstract:
Ear blight, caused by several Fusarium species, is a significant threat to wheat production in the EU. The distribution and predominance of the species are mainly determined by climatic conditions. Fusarium species can produce a range of mycotoxins, which may pose a considerable health threat to consumers. This project aims to obtain data relating climatic conditions to occurrence of Fusarium ear blight and mycotoxin production in order to develop quantitative risk assessment models on a pan-European scale. This will lead to a reduction in pesticide use, safe food and more sustainable production. Fusarium species will be diagnosed and quantified using newly developed PCR techniques and, mycotoxins quantified. Risk assessment models will be developed using data obtained from controlled environment experiments and improved further using field data collected from 80 sites from four European countries.
