Improved procedures for flatfish larval rearing through the use of probiotics

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-1999-31457
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date: 01-12-2000
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 2,029,181 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,359,000 EUR
Scientific Officer: Dominique LEVIEIL
Research topic: 5.1.2. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

Abstract:
Six partners will pursue a new, co-ordinated and systematic approach to improving the rearing of larval turbot using biological, non-antibiotic-dependent measures of disease control. Four different approaches will be applied to select probiotic bacteria, those which prevent the harmful effects of disease-causing micro-organisms, from a large numbers of isolates which the partners have obtained from a range of sources. These will be screened to identify those most suitable for use as probiotics. The most promising candidate probiotics will be tested in small-scale larval rearing experiments, followed by testing on an industrial scale. The project aims to improve larval fish health and survival, reduce use of antibiotics, and expand the output of larval turbot, which currently restricts significant growth of the flatfish aquaculture industry. In addition, the results should be transferable to many other larval rearing systems.
