Genes and genetic engineering for arbuscular mycorrhiza technology and applications in sustainable agriculture

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-1999-31319
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date:
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 3,082,745 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,753,493 EUR
Scientific Officer: Richard HARDWICK
Research topic: 5.1.1. Sustainable agriculture/Plant Systems

Abstract:
Overfertilising, agricultural additives such as sewage wastes and atmospheric pollution cause a decrease in soil fertility and plant production. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are symbiotic micro-organisms central to plant development in natural conditions (biofertilisers, bioprotectors) and can be used as biotools for new strategies in plant production systems to avoid heavy chemical inputs.

This joint project between research institutions and SMEs will provide:
1) sound information about genes encoding high-value symbiotic functions in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, necessary for their optimal use as biofertilisers;
2) genetically modified fungal products with new biological properties for plant growth enhancement in polluted soils (bioprotection) and with a low impact on the environment; and
3) added-value arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for inoculum use in plant production and as biosensors for soil pollution.
