Contract nr: QLK5-CT-1999-31151
Project type: RS (Research and Technology Development Project)
Starting date: 01-01-2001
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 2,197,681 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,800,000 EUR
Scientific Officer: Dominique LEVEIL
Research topic: 5.1.2. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

Abstract:
Fishing and aquaculture are important economic activities in the EU. This project offers a holistic and innovative approach to the questions of social, economic, environmental and ecological sustainability posed by the development of aquaculture and the changing fishery exploitation in coastal areas. It also integrates multidisciplinary research on the socioeconomic, biological-ecological consequences of aquaculture development to reach a conclusion on the effects of stability of the social and biological environment. It is expected to provide information that will be directly used by policy-makers. The results will provide recommendations on appropriate strategies for coastal-zone management and sustainable utilisation of renewable marine resources. The project involves five EU countries, facilitating comparison of the consequences of aquaculture development under different institutional, social and ecological conditions.
