Management of silver eel: human impact on downstream migrating silver eel in the river Meuse

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-2000-31141
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date: 01-04-2001
Duration: 24 months
Total cost: 811,495 EUR
EC Contribution: 400,092 EUR
Scientific Officer: Dominique LEVIEIL
Research topic: 5.1.2. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

Abstract:
During recent decades a substantial decrease in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) population observed in Europe, which might have a related impact on silver eel. The impact on silver eel in European rivers is caused by commercial fisheries and the mortality of eel passing through the turbines of hydro power stations. No estimate has been made of the cumulative mortality caused by a series of hydro power stations. No comparison has been made between the impact of fisheries and hydro power stations in a river system. In this project we seek to answer questions about the impact of fisheries and hydro power stations on the river Meuse. This will be achieved by using standard and novel telemetric methods. On the basis of an early-warning system, a tool will be developed for a turbine management system to prevent the silver eel passing through turbines, in order to improve eel populations and the sustainable aspect of hydro power stations.
