Low input animal production based on forage legumes for grazing systems *

Contract nr: QLRT-CT-2000-02328
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date:
Duration: 42 months
Total cost: 1,774,394 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,217,697 EUR
Scientific Officer:
Research topic: 5.1.1. Sustainable agriculture/Animal Systems

Abstract:
The objective is to provide a sound scientific basis for the use of legume-based swards in low input, environmentally sustainable grazing systems as an alternative to the use of heavily nitrogen fertilised grass swards. Integrated investigations in four countries will comprise the following work packages:

1. Compilation of a database of research information on legume-based grazing systems;
2. Measurement of agronomic performance in contrasting legume-based grazing systems;
3. Measurement of animal production in contrasting legume-based grazing systems;
4. Measurement of nutrient losses to the environment from legume-based grazing systems; and
5. Evaluation of the socio-economic impact of the adoption of legume-based grazing systems in the EU.

The results will be widely disseminated to the farming community ensuring rapid uptake of technology.

Objectives:
Overall objective: to provide a sound scientific basis for the use of legume-based swards in low input environmentally sustainable grazing systems. Key objectives:

1. To compile a European database of research on legume-based grazing systems including studies on agronomy, animal performance, environmental impact and economic sustainability;
2. To quantify agronomic, animal performance and environmental impact responses of grass/legume swards under a range of environmental conditions;
3. To evaluate novel legume species for use in grazing systems;
4. To quantity nutrient losses to the environment from legume-based systems; and
5. To evaluate the socio-economic impact of legume-based grazing systems.
