Contract nr: QLRT-CT-2000-02277
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date:
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 1,346,368 EUR
EC Contribution: 941,340 EUR
Scientific Officer:
Research topic: 5.5. Sustainable development of rural and other relevant areas

Abstract:
The aim of the project is to develop new analytical tools and models, to assess the contribution of aquaculture and capture fisheries to the development of coastal zones, and the extent of socio-economic interactions with concurrent sectors. Using techniques such as Computable General Equilibrium Models, the project will attempt a multidisciplinary approach to integrate ecological and social considerations not usually taken into account by traditional input-output methods.

Objectives:
The principal objective of this project is to develop new tools and models to assess the contribution of fisheries and aquaculture activities to the development of coastal areas, and the degree of inter-relationships which maritime activities maintain with components of other economic sectors in the same area. The exercise has a wider scope in that it can facilitate the decision process at the level of public policy-makers and a company. It will provide tools and models as decision-making aids (in particular with respect to decisions concerning the new Objective 2 and any structural measures for the fisheries sector).
